Steam Down est un collectif, et un véritable mouvement. Formé en mai 2017, le projet est né de la volonté d’Ahnansé de renouer avec une communauté : brisée non seulement par des tournées sans fin, mais aussi par les forces de gentrification et de censure qui menacent les arts dans toute la capitale. Dépourvu d’un espace stable et collaboratif dans lequel une telle créativité pourrait s’épanouir, Ahnansé a simplement choisi de faire le sien : dans le cas de Steam Down, leur Mecque musicale s’est avérée être un arc ferroviaire bar dans le sud de Londres, bientôt la maison d’un frénétique, soirée de jam hebdomadaire tristement célèbre pour son occasion de réflexion, de libération… et beaucoup de sueur. Alors qu’ils se préparent à présenter leur premier EP tout aussi immersif, « Five Fruit » – et ramener la nuit hebdomadaire de la pandémie – le retour de Steam Down est particulièrement émouvant. Le collectif a déjà vu des artistes comme Kamasi Washington, Charlotte Dos Santos, Poppy Ajudha et Jools Holland apparaître à l’improviste lors de leurs soirées, tout en remportant deux Jazz FM Awards, jouant à Glastonbury, en Boiler Room : tout cela devant leur premier corpus de travail, qui a été introduit par le récent single ‘EMPOWER’.
En 2021, Steam Down a sorti son incroyable premier EP, ‘Five Fruit’.‘Five Fruit’ est un EP ambitieux et expansif qui témoigne parfaitement de la puissance de Steam Down. Chaque chanson, selon le fondateur Ahnansè, est un fruit pour l’esprit, et un moyen de transformation émotionnelle. De la force auto-épanouissante de «Empower » au titre « Untie », plus réfléchie (sur l’amour-propre et l’action face à la solitude quotidienne), «Five Fruit » se termine sur « Can’t Hold Me Back’:» : une combustion bruyante de toutes les émotions auxquelles l’auditeur a accès tout au long du voyage « Five Fruit ». Avec Tinyman et Afronaut Zu et l’ajout de Shumba Maasai, « Can’t Hold Me Back » fusionne la synergie londonienne qui sous-tend si naturellement la chaleur de l’identité de Steam Down alors que – aux côtés de « Five Fruit » dans son ensemble – amène vraiment le groupe à un tout autre niveau.

Steam Down is a collective, a weekly night, and a genuine movement. Formed in May of 2017, the project was born out of Ahnansé’s desire to reconnect to a community: fractured not only by endless touring, but the forces of gentrification and censure threatening the arts across the capital. Lacking a stable and collaborative space in which such creativity could flourish, Ahnansé chose simply to make his own: in Steam Down’s case, their musical Mecca proved to be a railway arch bar in South London, soon home to a frenzied, weekly jam-night infamous for its opportunity for reflection, release…and a lot of sweat. As they prepare to roll out their similarly-immersive debut EP, ‘Five Fruit’ – and bring the weekly night back from the pandemic – Steam Down’s return feels particularly poignant. The collective has already seen the likes of Kamasi Washington, Charlotte Dos Santos, Poppy Ajudha and Jools Holland appear unannounced on their nights, whilst picking up two Jazz FM Awards, playing Glastonbury, selling out Village Underground and headlining Boiler Room’s festival: all up front of their first body of work, which was introduced by recent single ‘EMPOWER’. ‘
‘Five Fruit’ is an expansive and ambitious EP that perfectly speaks to the power of Steam Down. Each song, according to founder Ahnansè, is a fruit for the spirit, and a means of emotional transformation. From the self-fulfilling strength of ‘EMPOWER’ to the more reflective ‘Untie’ (about self-love and agency in the face of everyday loneliness), ‘Five Fruit’ closes on SD-Weekly-favourite ‘Can’t Hold Me Back’: a raucous combustion of all the emotions accessed by the listener throughout the ‘Five Fruit’ journey. Featuring Tinyman and Afronaut Zu with the addition of wordsmith Shumba Maasai, ‘Can’t Hold Me Back’ fuses together the African-London synergy which so naturally underpins the heat of Steam Down’s identity whilst – alongside ‘Five Fruit’ as a whole – truly taking the group to a whole new level.
