Florist est un groupe composé de Emily Sprague, Jonnie Baker, Rick Spataro et Felix Walworth. En juillet
2022, Florist annonce son nouvel album éponyme sur Double Double Whammy. En même temps que l’annonce de l’album, le groupe a partagé une vidéo pour le single principal de l’album, « Red Bird Pt. 2 (Morning) », une méditation poignante, centrée sur la guitare, qui poursuit la préoccupation de Sprague pour l’amour, la perte et le monde naturel. Elle chante « She’s in the birdsong/She won’t be gone » (Elle est dans le chant des oiseaux/Elle ne partira pas), en parlant de sa mère décédée et en faisant preuve d’un sens miséricordieux de la résolution.
« Cette chanson est l’introduction à Florist, un album qui parle beaucoup de la célébration des personnes qui font partie de nos vies et de l’importance considérable des liens « , explique Emily Sprague. « C’est lyriquement et spirituellement une continuation de là où Florist s’est arrêté il y a 5 ans à la fin de If Blue Could Be Happiness. Nous avons enregistré la chanson sur une bande 1/2 » sous une véranda en juin. Les sons de la nature sont en direct. Les oiseaux ont vraiment chanté avec nous.
Florist ressemble à l’aboutissement d’un voyage de dix ans. C’est leur quatrième album complet, mais le premier qui mérite l’appellation de « self-titled ». « Nous l’avons appelé Florist parce que ce ne sont pas seulement mes chansons avec un groupe d’accompagnement », explique Sprague. « C’est une pratique. C’est une collaboration. C’est notre seule vie. Ce sont mes meilleurs amis et la musique est ce qu’elle est grâce à cela. » Florist est aussi l’album le plus fort de la décennie de carrière du groupe, une œuvre immersive qui transmet la magie de la terre et de la famille, et tout le cœur du groupe.

Florist announce their new self-titled album, out July 29th on Double Double Whammy. Along with the album announcement the band has shared a video for the album’s lead single, “Red Bird Pt. 2 (Morning),” a poignant, guitar-centric meditation that carries on Sprague’s concern with love, loss and the natural world. “She’s in the birdsong/She won’t be gone,” she sings of her late mother, proffering a merciful sense of resolve.
“This song is the introduction to Florist, an album journey very much about the celebration of the people in our lives and the massive importance of connection,” says Emily Sprague. “It is lyrically and spiritually a continuation of where Florist left off 5 years ago at the end of If Blue Could Be Happiness. We recorded the song to 1/2” tape on a screened-in porch in June. The nature sounds are live. The birds really sang along.”
Florist feels like the culmination of a decade-long journey, their fourth full-length album, but the first deserving of a self-titled designation. “We called it Florist because this is not just my songs with a backing band,” Sprague explains. “It’s a practice. It’s a collaboration. It’s our one life. These are my best friends and the music is the way that it is because of that.”
Florist is also the strongest album of the band’s decade-long career, an immersive work that conveys the magic of the earth and of family, and the whole of the band’s heart.
